Community Action Meeting : Legacy of Giving
February 20 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Free
Join us for a powerful and engaging Community Action Meeting on February 20, where we honor the rich legacy of Black philanthropy and grassroots fundraising. As part of Black History Month, this event will explore the deep-rooted traditions of giving that have sustained and empowered Black communities for generations—from the historic fundraising efforts of Black churches and civic groups to the susu savings circles of the Caribbean and Africa.
Featuring insights from nonprofit consultant Markita Samuel, we’ll uncover how social events, game nights, and community gatherings have historically been used to fundraise for education, activism, and neighborhood development. Additionally, we will discuss the importance of community-based fundraising for the Houston Freedmen’s Town Conservancy (HFTC) and how you can get involved in preserving and revitalizing this historic neighborhood.
Why Attend?
- Learn how Black communities have built lasting legacies through giving.
- Discover ways to support Houston Freedmen’s Town Conservancy
