Archaeology Now: Freedmen’s Town Heritage Walking Tour

This May, Archaeology Now: Notre-Dame A Wider World is engaging with the legacy of Freedmen’s Town! Join us Saturday, May 17, 2025, tour the historic district of Freedmen’s Town and see original structures that include homes, churches, and the brick streets paved by its emancipated leaders.
An additional highlight will be a visit to Bethel Church Park, a sacred space built in Gothic style that once served as a church for the community. Following a devastating fire, it is now a place of special memory.
Reception of creole cuisine and a tour of the Gregory School follow the walking tour. This event is limited to 40 participants with $25/person from 10 AM – noon

The Houston Freedmen’s Town Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that protects and preserves the history of Freedmen’s Town for the benefit of future generations. We support community engagement, re-education, and heritage tourism.
