Community Cleanup: Mt. Carmel’s Prayer Garden and Labyrinth

Join us in Freedmen’s Town to clean up Mt. Carmel’s Prayer Garden and Labyrinth! We will meet every first Saturday of the month from 8 AM to 12 PM. About Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church
Founded in 1915 by formerly enslaved people after emancipation, the church served as a vital spiritual and community institution until it was removed. The Historic Freedmen‘s Town labyrinth is co-designed and constructed by Reginald Adams, on the former site of the Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church in the spring of 2014.
The Houston Freedmen’s Town Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that protects and preserves the history of Freedmen’s Town for the benefit of future generations. We support community engagement, re-education, and heritage tourism.
Funding has been provided to the Houston Freedmen’s Town Conservancy from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as part of the American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act of 2021.
