Official Statement from Houston Freedmen’s Town Conservancy

Updated July 7, 2025

The Houston Freedmen’s Town Conservancy (HFTC) is aware of recent social media activity and public commentary involving an individual formerly associated with the Freedmen’s Town Farmers Market. In light of the misinformation circulating and the concerns it has raised, we feel it is important to offer full clarity on the matter.

The individual at the center of this discourse is not and has never been formally affiliated with HFTC. The Freedmen’s Town Farmers Market was independently created and operated, and while it initially received some support from members of the broader community, it has not operated in partnership with, nor under the endorsement of, the Conservancy.

The market’s last known public activity was in 2023, and community members have confirmed that it has been inactive in Freedmen’s Town for approximately two years. Any past informal acknowledgments of the market by individuals no longer affiliated with HFTC do not represent a current or standing relationship.

Since the recent remarks surfaced, we’ve received a barrage of messages, including emails, direct messages, and public comments, some of which have been aggressive, accusatory, and rooted in confusion about our organization’s role. Several individuals have even called for confrontation in Freedmen’s Town, leading to increased safety concerns for our staff and community.

The social media accounts still using the name “Freedmen’s Town Farmers Market” are not operated by HFTC or anyone within the Freedmen’s Town community. However, we recognize that outdated bios and misrepresented affiliations continue to mislead the public. We are actively working to address the spread of misinformation and to correct the record where possible, with the goal of easing confusion and protecting public safety.

While we remain focused on mitigating misrepresentation, our hearts are with the families and communities affected by the devastating flood at Camp Mystic in Central Texas. This tragedy has deeply impacted our state, and it deserves our full compassion, reflection, and support. We ask that conversations online and in our communities remain respectful of the real grief people are facing.

Freedmen’s Town is a sacred cultural district built by formerly enslaved people who used their freedom to establish self-sufficient lives, build infrastructure, and create a vibrant legacy of resilience. Today, it stands as one of the most significant historical communities in Houston.

At HFTC, we are committed to preserving that legacy through education, cultural programming, community partnerships, and historic protection efforts. We work every day to honor the past while building toward a more unified future.

We ask the public and press to distinguish between the individual actions of unaffiliated persons and the work of our nonprofit organization, which remains rooted in service, dignity, and historical truth.

We thank those who have reached out in good faith and shared our official statement in the interest of public understanding.
