Our History
Houston’s Future Begins With You.
A Past Remembered, A Future Reborn.
Houston Freedmen’s Town is a non-profit organization dedicated to securing the future of the Freedmen’s Town district by cultivating its economic potential. The Conservancy will build a Network of Action and trigger investment to preserve Freedmen’s Town’s unique history and bring new economic opportunities to the area and beyond.
By The Numbers
Freedmen’s Town was established in 1865 by formerly enslaved men, women and children in what is currently the Fourth Ward section of Houston, Texas.
Due to the lack of protections and preservation, approximately 79% of Freedmen’s Towns historic structures have been demolished since 1985.
Over 50 locations of cultural and historic interest remain today, creating an opportunity to still save the area’s rich legacy.
$25 million dollars will allow the Conservacny to fund historic preservation, complete capital improvement projects, and build the new Freedmen’s Town Visitor’s Center.
By 2023 the Conservancy will achieve our four strategic goals, establishing a firm for us to build and grow on.
Freedmne’s Town is one-of-a-kind and the ONLY post-Civil War, National Register Historic District of its type in the United States. With Sites of Memory recognized in the UNESCO Slave Route Project, it is worthy of global recognition.
Join us and deliver a call heard around the world to visit, invest, and celebrate the important story of Freedmen’s Town. We need you to help us lay the path towards a new future, because Houston’s future begins with you.
