Heritage District Tours
Telling the Full Story Is An Act of Liberation for Freedmen’s Town
EQUITABLE HERITAGE TOURISM IN ACTION
Uncovering this hidden Houston gem will reveal the answers to it’s early success and highlight the path toward it’s rebirth
The Freedmen’s Town Heritage District tours are guided educational opportunities to learn about the rich heritage of Freedmen’s Town. The tours include historic homes, churches, cultural institutions, and infrastructure on the iconic brick streets led by community advocates and legacy residents of the Freedmen’s Town community.
Historically, the freedmen built a vibrant community of blacksmiths, lawyers, teachers, brick-makers, doctors, and haberdashers. The original settlement grew into the economic, spiritual, and cultural focus of Houston’s African American Community. The community was self-sufficient with over 400 businesses, hos- pitals, unique architecture, schools, libraries, YMCA, YWCA, movie theatres, and many different denominational churches. Sharing these stories with audiences K-12 to age 99 empowers future generations to be guardians of this Story of Freedom, halting its erasure from our memory.
